My sister has a portugese water dog -- I BEGGED her to write the POTUS and warn him! But as you implicitly point out, the dog is as good as any metaphor for the bag of problems he was handed with the oath of office. I love animals, truly, and I understand the temptation. I might eventually get a pet because I'd like my grandkids to have the experience and their parents are too smart to get a dog. But my advice to you is the same as I give myself: DON'T DO IT, go help snowbird clean cages instead. That way you get the poop without the commitment!

You can't believe the POTUS picks up poop, eh? :D Funny that you are contemplating doing it yourself though! :D

As someone of a similar age, perhaps I can weigh in on what has been my experience with pets so far. I've had various pets while raising my son, because, well, a pet adds a lot to a family. My current Kitty is equivalent in age to an 80 year old person, so her time before 'crossing the rainbow bridge' is getting close.

While I adore Kitty, (I got her when she was 3) and I will be very sad when she passes, I am very doubtful that I will get another young animal again.

I am contemplating getting another animal - but if I do - it will be an older one, or I will foster.

My reasoning is that there are a great many 'middle-aged' animals out there - or ones that need foster homes - and the time commitment is not as long as with a younger animal.

I can't look 15 to 20 years down the road and decide that I want to take on the responsibility of pet ownership for that long. However, I can adopt or foster a pet and make the commitment for 1/2 that time.

Something to think about. :)
